ADHD and your Child
What is ADHD?
  • ADHD stands for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
    • ADD stands for Attention-Deficit Disorder, and lacks the hyperactivity/impulsivity component
  • The causes and risk factors for ADHD are unknown, but current research shows that genetics play an important role
    To be diagnosed with ADHD, a child must show:
  • Some symptoms causing impairment before age 7
  • At least 6 symptoms overall (symptoms of inattentiveness and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity)
    Symptoms of Inattention include:Symptoms of Hyperactivity/Impulsivity include:
    Careless mistakes/lack of attention to detailFidgeting/squirming
    Lack of sustained attentionLeaving seat
    Poor listeningExcessive running/climbing or feelings of restlessness
    Failure to follow through on tasksDifficulty with quiet activities

  • Symptoms in more than 2 settings—for example, at home, at school, and in social environments—and not caused by another problem
  • Symptoms for the last 6 months
Beyond these commonalities, each child is different and will exhibit a unique mixture of symptoms. ADHD may show itself differently in your child than in his or her peers.
  • Some children will be more hyperactive or impulsive, while others may have more inattentive symptoms
